Falmouth is undoubtedly one of Britain’s most thriving and lively towns, offering a very unique lifestyle, bustling town centre and beautiful beaches. Recently voted as the best place to live in the UK by readers of The Sunday Times, Falmouth offers many attractions such as Pendennis Castle, National Maritime Museum, pubs, bars, restaurants and the Falmouth Marina. The combination of maritime heritage and modern creativity makes the town a hugely popular spot. It is a constant carnival during the summer months, yet still energetic in the winter, offering great food festivals and sea shanties to keep all entertained. The railway line takes you to Truro in under half an hour; many beautiful areas surround Falmouth, including Flushing, Mylor and the Helford River.

Penryn

Penryn is a small and historic port on the south coast of Cornwall, chartered in 1236. During the 19th Century, the town was known for the export of granite, used in such buildings as the Bank of England and many of the country’s lighthouses. The town is home to Penryn Campus, a large university campus occupied by two institutions – Falmouth University and the University of Exeter. Over recent years the area has thrived, due to a significant increase in student population, in turn having a positive impact on local businesses. The scenic Helford River is a short drive away, with areas such as Falmouth, Truro and Helston in close proximity, making this attractive town a perfect place for those seeking a quieter lifestyle, while being conveniently close to the liveliness of larger towns.

Flushing

Flushing is one of the most admired and sought-after villages on the south coast of Cornwall, by virtue of its extremely sheltered position, warm climate, direct access onto the superb day-sailing waters of the Fal Estuary and proximity to the nearby towns of Falmouth and Truro. A small and highly regarded primary school is set in the heart of the village. A potent attraction is the sailing club, which runs the finest yacht racing, situated on the quay of Flushing with panoramic views of Falmouth Harbour, close to The Waterside restaurant, offering fresh seafood and idyllic views. There are also two great pubs, The Royal Standard and Seven Stars.

Mylor

Mylor is a civil parish about five miles from Falmouth. Mylor Bridge, its largest village, is located at the head of Mylor Creek, one of the western tidal inlets of the Carrick Roads, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The village has a particularly good selection of day-to-day amenities, including a highly regarded primary school, sub-post office, newsagent, butcher and hairdressers. The village is also served by a doctor’s surgery, dentist and The Lemon Arms public house. There is a regular bus service to both Truro and Falmouth. In an easterly direction along the creek is Mylor Yacht Harbour, which is Cornwall’s most important and popular marina, offering excellent facilities for dinghy, motorboat and yachting enthusiasts. The wonderful and famous 13th Century thatched Pandora Inn is located within about one and a half miles, resting beautifully on the banks of Restronguet Creek, with a large floating pontoon for customers to enjoy.

Helford River

The Helford River is a large estuary which sits in between the western edge of Falmouth Bay and the eastern side of The Lizard peninsula. Renowned for its beautiful scenery, the Helford River offers secluded and quiet beaches and a number of villages to explore. Touring the river by boat gives the best opportunity of finding inland creeks and hidden beaches. Mawnan Smith is one of the area’s most highly sought-after addresses, home to The Red Lion, a stunning thatched public house, and is close to Budock Vean Hotel’s golf course, as well as Trebah Gardens. Constantine, approximately two miles from Mawnan Smith, is another lovely village with thriving sports clubs. Between Constantine and Mawnan Smith you will find Port Navas, a true hidden gem, dating to as far back as the Iron Age. The village, located at the head of Port Navas Creek, is home to Port Navas Oyster Farm and Port Navas Yacht Club. Gweek is yet another stunning settlement, home to a convenience store, public house, the Cornish Seal Sanctuary and Gweek Classic Boatyard.

Lizard Peninsula

Remaining mostly untouched, The Lizard’s display of long seafaring heritage is a big attraction for both tourists and locals. This area has endless offerings when it comes to beaches and hidden coves – Kynance Cove undoubtedly being the most popular, with other spots away from the crowds. Villages along The Lizard such as Mullion, Coverack and Gweek, provide fresh seafood restaurants, water sports, and tranquil environments, with utterly stunning views. Standing right at the tip of The Lizard, you will be at the most southerly point on the UK mainland. This part of Cornwall is an unspoilt gem.

Helston

The lively town of Helston is situated at the northern end of The Lizard peninsula, just nine miles south west of the popular town of Falmouth. With plenty of historical attractions and architecture, provided by old public houses and thick set miner’s cottages, there is a traditional feel to this town. Helston is in close proximity to many scenic places such as Porthleven, Poldhu Cove and Mullion Cove, making it an excellent area to live. With the addition of a boating lake and park, it boasts natural scenic beauty. The National Trust’s Penrose Estate, home to Cornwall’s largest natural lake, with wooded country walks and stretches of coastline, make for a perfect day out. Helston is also home of the annual Furry Dance (known as the Flora Dance) which is said to originate from the medieval period.

Perranarworthal

Carnon Downs

Carnon Downs is a village located three miles south west of Truro, with a true community feel. The harbour town of Falmouth, in the other direction, provides many more amenities including well renowned public houses, bars, delis and cafes. Carnon Downs offers residents a doctor’s surgery and a convenience store, and is a little over a mile from the Bissoe Cycle Trail. In such a convenient location, Carnon Downs provides favourable access to both Cornwall’s north and south coast beaches.

Feock

Feock sits on the Carrick Roads and lies within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. One way to reach Feock is on one of the UK’s few remaining car and passenger chain ferries, taking people across the stretch of water between The Roseland and Feock. Loe Beach, a south-facing beach just below the village, provides a hire for motorboats, kayaks and paddleboards. The village is home to Trelissick Estate, comprising beautifully landscaped gardens and riverside woods which overlook the River Fal and Carrick Roads. Restronguet Creek borders the south of the village, where the 17th Century Pandora Inn provides an atmospheric and scenic place to dine and drink. The village of Devoran sits on the north east bank of the Carnon River, about four miles from Truro.

Truro

The only city in Cornwall, Truro has a good range of shops, schools and commercial facilities, multi-screen cinema, newly refurbished Hall for Cornwall, and an array of restaurants, public houses and bars. The dominant attraction of Truro Cathedral provides historical tourism for the city, alongside the Royal Cornwall Museum containing the rich details of Cornwall’s history. There is a wealth of reputable junior and senior schools, including independents Truro School and Truro High School for Girls, in addition to Richard Lander School and Penair School. Truro forms part of the main railway link from Penzance to London Paddington, with other links to Falmouth. If sports is an interest, Truro is home to many of Cornwall’s best sports teams, with a plethora of clubs to join.
